2009 MBP: Worth Upgrading?

I have a mid-2009 13" MBP 5.5 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHZ 256 GB HD 4 GB RAM.

I originally bought this machine for work, but I enjoy it so much it has become my primary computer. Can it be upgraded to work smoothly with Photoshop and Lightroom? I shoot RAW files on a Canon 40D.

If I understand things correctly, 8 GB RAM is the maximum amount of RAM for my MBP. This would be an inexpensive upgrade (i.e. $46.00), but will it make much of a performance difference?

I've been reading this forum. Seems like upgrading to a solid state drive might be a second upgrade option. A 256 GB drive currently runs for about $220.00.

Would either/both of these upgrades improve performance enough to justify the cost?

Thanks in advance.
