Nikon D90 Built in flash not working - will a speedlight flash still work? HELP!

The OP is stating that Nikon quoted a $300 repair price.

He says the lights he's looking at are cheaper, so that immediately eliminates the SB600/700 and above. This would indicate a SB400 or third party.

Plus, he has been happy with the built in light, so I'm sure he would be thrilled with a SB400.

If I were you, I would find someone with a external flash and test out the circuitry of the camera itself to make sure it works. Would be a shame to buy an external and find out that it was also inoperable.
