Do not forget that the Compact System Cameras can perform as well as many DSLR's. You only really need the space munching mirror now if you want ultra fast focusing or very top end performance. My SX40 certainly does not replace my Samsung NX11/100 but the NX100 with its 30mm f2 lens weighs 460gm and the SX40 wighs 670 gm so the larger sensor camera is much lighter and is the one to use indoors. OK the Canon has the mega zoom but the alternative aps-c cameras at short focal lengths are not necessary bulkier now.

If convenience is most important, than SX40 would be a good choice. As others pointed out, it won't have dslr performance, speed and do well in low light or when using high ISO number..

I handled the SX40 for the first time the other day and was surprised that it's almost as large and heavy as my Canon XSi dslr. However, the SX40 has an exceptional zoom range, and it's built right in the camera.

I've thought often of selling my DSLR but can't. A dslr really performs better than any of the many compact cameras I've owned, though with lens attached it's heavier and bulkier.
