Frankly, the idea of fixed RAM is not a bad idea. Too many users end up with crap 3rd party ram (Hey! 32GB modules for $9.99 scream some posts). A solid hardware platform without the ability to upgrade is why my macs work so well. In the Windows world, I bought high quality components. But after I assembled this melting pot of performance, grief ensued. A lot of grief can be avoided by support as well as end users by ensuring that the memory is up to spec. They are still leaving the storage open to upgrades. I have no beef with this because thankfully they didn't start with 4GB forcing a model upgrade. 8GB is a nice sweet spot. If you need more, then maybe evaluating how much you have open might be the answer. You can only do so much at one time right?
My biggest need is a stable system, so I'm game.

That is a remarkable bit of self-delusion.

If nothing else, soldered in RAM means one should expect that this will be an expendable device. Anything at all that goes wrong results in a replacement of the entire logic board. The way the display is manufactured not only means expensive replacements, but that it is not recyclable. Just wait until the battery need replacing.

If you have not already, take a look at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Pro-with-Retina-Display-Teardown/9462/1#.T9vkLN2-XFR
