Ahh...so how comes that in a scene like the OP showed your eyes still would have shown you structure in the sky AND by far quite a lot of "light" in the shadows of the wood on the right side?

Because it will not focus on it as a whole, it will focus on different parts of it separately, scanning with a tiny 200 kilopixel part of the retina called fovea, adjusting the pupil size as needed. In effect, your eye does not show you a picture, it shows you video, with pretty bad oof and low-res everything except a tiny central portion of it.

Practically speaking, you cannot see even that picture. Go out, look at the bright sky, then look at the dark shadow - you will not see anything there for a second or a few.
