Procedure on E-M5 for panorama

Just read the manual re. panoramas and not sure I have the procedure correct. When taking the first photo [if panning to right] you should "remember" the right edge of the photo and then align the next photo to align or slightly overlap on the left with the right edge of the first? Sounds simple I guess but is that all there is as far as setting up the photos, alignment wise? What do you do if for example there is little to pick out for an alignment point, say of a oceanview or scenes with no physical structures?
