While I have nothing against using high-quality protective filters, if you're talking about the 18-55, is it really worth protecting a $100 lens with a $50 filter? Any filter worth less than $50 will affect image quality - especially in bright conditions like on a beach.

I'd be less worried about getting water on the front element than about getting sand into the lens itself, and a filter won't protect against that at all.

A CPL is a different matter, of course - definitely recommend getting one of those, especially for the beach.
