As noted by others, if you are serious about flash photography, you need an external flash anyway. However, those built in flashes are really nice as fill flashes, especially if you just want to throw a camera and single lens without a lot of other stuff.

BTW, I disagree that fast lenses (and high ISO) can take the place of flash. I shot an event recently at ISO 6400 without flash under fluorescent lighting. Wished I had used fill. The shadows were a bit much. Had to do too much tweaking in LR. I photographed a bride getting ready. I tried available light (fluorescent lights) and flach bounded off the ceiling with a Denb flash breacket and flipit. The results from flash were a lot better, no noise (I was using a 5D at ISO 3200 for the available light shots) and the WB was a lot better.
