D800=medium format
Jun 13, 2012

I find it very interesting that at least one reviewer of the D800 (E) has called it comparable to medium format . While studying photography (in the film days of yore), it was impressed upon us that Medium Format (MF) would always produce a finer, more detailed image than 35mm. Even today in the digital era, very few dispute the better quality of a medium format sensor. In spite of this, in spite of the fact that MF format sensors often exceed 36 Megs, with larger pixels reviewers are singing the praises of the D800 (E) and implying that MF is a dead format. Really? Aren't we getting a ahead of ourselves? The new Nikon is definitely an eye opener. It clearly has set new standards in 35mm, FX imaging. However I don't think that it is quite up to the level of MF. So lets calm down and see the D800 for what it is: A really very good FX format camera that produces finely detailed images that is unrivaled in its format range. What the D800 gives us is a compact camera, that can be used in the field..out of the studio, with much greater ease. than MF. unfortunately that is all it is.
