Larger light gathering area. Because that's what it comes down to. The only reason photosite pitch is a factor is because at present there is a slight advantage in active surface area with larger photosites.

The size of the photosites in themselves has no relevance at all to overall image noise (until we start getting too much interference from quantum phenomena that is, oh how I long for that day!). It's the side effect of reduced light gathering surface which causes the noise increase. That's an engineering problem which will be solved.

Or actually, that is an oversimplification on my part. Given equivalent light gathering surface more photosites is always better (at the extreme on one end is one huge photosite, at the other extreme is capturing the individual photons - there is just no comparison). Again, until we reach the limits of wave effects, but we're still far from that point.
