Relative to others the Sony NEX-3/5 cameras now occupy the position in the APS-C market that used to be inhabited by the XXXD line.

They aren't even in the same market, because they aren't SLRs. Heck, they don't have viewfinders at all. (or flash hotshoes either) They're just over-grown and over-expensive viewfinderless compacts that aren't very compact. They don't come close to matching even the lowest end dSLRs in performance, ergonomics, functionality, or system support.

If I were in this market (and I am, owning a T2i now and looking elsewhere), I wouldn't even consider these useless Sony NEXs, and I haven't.

+1 and also see Scorpio's first hand user experience a few posts above. I would take a Canon 1100D (or even my old 20D) over a Sony NEX any time.
