It's simple, when an Olympus' lens aperture fails, it typically defaults to the smallest possible aperture (unfortunately). If that's the case, viewfinder will be almost pitch black, with possibly a barely usable viewfinder in sunny conditions.

If VF is ok with that same lens, it still might have been a lens problem, with intermittent aperture failure.
