Is it realistic to expect to get sharp images without the VF-2 or tripod setup and this camera/lens combination?

Yes, you will get sharp images. The stabilisation works nicely with this combination, I have it too. The lens is big enough to grip steadily even using the LCD.

I use my VF-2 not to stabilise but to enjoy photography more when using my autofocus lenses.

It was really bought to use old manual focus lenses swiftly and accurately - which it does well.

I have more than one Olympus Pen body to swap it onto so my costs can be justified a bit more ... but sheesh! The price!
Cheer yourself up by checking out the price of the Sony NEX viewfinder ...

shop around.

I have seen it for $199.00.
