In principle you can learn photography on a D800 just as you can, in principle, learn to fly on an F-18 Hornet. You are, however, buying an enormously sophisticated camera which is designed for already experienced and knowledgeable photographers and this will, IMO, make your life more difficult.

I'd have described a D7000 with the standard kit 18-105 VR as a very good camera in it's own right, well beyond what a beginner needs.

After reading a few reviews I started to prefer the Nikon D800

Why ?

Compared to what other "few" items ?
