Actually it would be a better gift, since the 14-42mm will be better for her, because it has more range for her to play with. Besides, I've hardly used my 14-42mm, so is brand new. The idea of getting the 14mm alongside, is that I don't mind loosing the 14-42mm, as long as I still get some wide angle option when I need it.

I want to get her a m43 is because she is very fond of my 20mm 1.7, for good reasons, so she can borrow it whenever I'm not using it. Besides, it will always be a better camera to learn than a P&S. She absolutely loves shallow DOF. Almost impossible with a P&S.

I'm giving my small daughter a camera for her birthday, although I'm undecided yet. My two options, so far, are:

  • EPL-1 body only. She will borrow my Panny 14-42mm, but I'm left with a wide angle. I was thinking about getting the Panny 14mm .

Total investment: 149.95 + 156.99 = 306.94

or

  • GF3 w/14mm. I'll get the 14mm, she will have my 14-42mm.

Total investment: 379.99 in Amazon

What do you think?

I think a gift should be something that is all yours and can be used. A camera body with a borrowed lens is only half a gift. A camera body with your discarded might amount to 3/4 of a gift. But if your daughter is under 12-13, why not present her with some compact camera for 150.- all for herself (to get her started) and get for you the lens you want.

Remember: half a present is no present.

Peter.
