E-M5 EVF "drop down"
Jun 11, 2012

One feature of the E-M5 stopping me from buying this otherwise excellent camera is the handling of the display.

The E-M5, as the E-P3, and other Pens including the E-PL1 with revised firmware, does the same thing. If you set the record review to x sec (0.5 or so to 20s), the picture taken will remain in the EVF or until you press the shutter button. But you can't do anything with the image - can't display the different info, and can't magnify. Plus, in that 0.5 sec, you miss out on the action which may be taking place.

If the record review is set to "auto-playback", then the image will drop down to the rear LCD - and the EVF blacks out.

Furthermore, if the EVF is set to auto eye detect, and the LCD is displaying a played back image, the EVF will switch back to live view mode when you raise it to eye level - ie, no more playback. It assumes that you are done with the playback and want to take another photo. I would have expected it to switch the playback image to the EVF until the shutter button is half pressed.

The only way to view the playback in the EVF is to disable EVF eye-detect auto-switching, and manually push the EVF button to display everything in the EVF instead of the LCD. However, once you take another photo (and the record review is set to auto-playback) the playback will automatically drop down to the LCD again! You them have to press the EVF button again to view the playback in the EVF.

Does anybody else feel the display could be done better?
