bass-ackwards AF hunt while trying to focus on distant objects

It seems ridiculous that, when faced with a blank sky and a distant bird, the AF (in this case, on a 60D) hunts first in the wrong direction, rather than toward infinity. Other than trying to use manual focus (which creates its own set of problems), does anyone have any tips on how to best deal with this issue? I've read that on the new T4i, they have addressed it, but that doesn't help the rest of us.
