Ultra-light ballhead advice, please
Jun 9, 2012

Hi guys,

I've recently moved from Nikon DSLR to Micro Four Thirds (mostly Olympus stuff) and am loving the weight savings.

Unfortunately, I've found that accessory manufacturers have been slow to respond to the trend towards lightweight systems. Most good-quality tripods and ballheads are designed for heavier DSLR cameras. Mirrorless users face the inconvenience of hauling around 400g ballheads and 1.5kg tripods for their 350g cameras.

I am looking for a fully-featured ballhead (panning and friction control) that weighs less than 200g.

The best options I've been able to find so far are too heavy:

Arca P0 = 280g and non-standard release causes problems, expensive at $300
Feisol CB-30C = 283g and no panning base
Photo Clam PC30N = 295g and a bit pricey
Sirui G10 = 300g

RRS BH25LR = The lightest option at 221g, but no friction control / so-so reviews
Kirk = Their smallest is 540g
Markins = Q3 is 370g and two reviewers say it is inferior to the Photo Clam

Am I missing something?
