Why would the replies be different? Sony has had hybrid OVF / Live View cameras for several years. The headline feature is the Canon does this differently with its combined PDAF/CDAF mechanism. It still does the mirror flip trick to get quicker PDAF focus in live view implying you still need to do it. It seems an awful lot of technology to keep a poky OVF for stills and get AF for video.

And the OVF works well with the main PDAF module. You have the OVF for when you need speed, and the rear screen for when you want more precision.

Like a Sony A580 you mean? That has PDAF for the OVF and PDAF live view with the option for CDAF live view as well. The difference between the two is the Canon can do AF in video but Canon's own blurb suggests the interaction between PDAF and CDAF is not seamless so it will be interesting to see if it works.

Here's a first video in good light to give a small impression. Filmed from the rear LCD you can already tell it's hunting and rather slow with one of the two dedicated STM lenses.

Go to 3:31 or so.
