Fast Primes--DOF, Sucking up light, Speed, Minimizing ISO
In reply to wasserball, Jun 8, 2012

HI!

These forums are full of images where one could argue that too wide an aperture was used (some of us like portraits with only one eye in focus, and some don't!).

Here are some examples of fast lenses being used at or near maximal aperture. I'll leave it you to decide whether you like the images or not!

Picture taken in a cave :

Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/60s f/1.4 at 28.0mm iso3200

Narrow DOF :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF
1/1600s f/1.4 at 28.0mm iso1600

Crop :

Sucking up the light in a dimly light club where no flash was allowed :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF AF
1/200s f/1.4 at 85.0mm iso5000

Yes, DOF gets narrow at MFD, even at f/4.5!
85 1.4 at MTD (minimal focal distance) without extension tubes :
Nikon D70 ,Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF AF
1/60s f/4.5 at 85.0mm

Really narrow DOF
85 1.4 ar MFD with extension tube :
Nikon D50 ,Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF AF ,Kenko extension tubes
1/30s f/1.4 at 85.0mm

Some motion artifact and some Ca (microphone) :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF AF
1/200s f/1.4 at 85.0mm iso3200

Not sure if f/2 on a 200mm lens is considered "fast"...I think so :

Frosty and Christmas Bokeh :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/400s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso1600

Capturing a fast moment :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/2500s f/2.5 at 200.0mm iso400

Blurring a boring, distracting background :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/1250s f/2.2 at 200.0mm iso320

Would you believe this was shot through a cage mesh?
Blurring out the foreground :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/3200s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso200

Freezing a Bird :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/2000s f/2.2 at 200.0mm iso250

"Arrghh!" :
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED AF-S VR
1/200s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso200

Best Regards,

RB
