According to Sony the first and foremost benefit is the LV experience, see their promotion material. They tend to mentioned video last.

The EVF's extra information can be displayed on any camera using live view, and every DSLR manufacturer (except Sony) has managed to put tons of essential shooting information in the optical finder, including grid lines, ISO, buffer/card space, metering mode, rangefinder/focus direction, tilt, and exposure mode. And the transparent LCD used in modern OVFs theoretically allows manufacturers to put the info over the viewfinder view if they want to.

Not entirely true as SLT's get some of their information directly off the main sensor, which is always going to be more accurate than guessing or using secondary sensors while the main sensor is blocked by the mirror.

On-sensor PDAF also allows for fast AF in live view, although we'll have to see just how good Canon's implementation is.

With limitations as soon as light is less than ideal.
