The big question about the RX100 video mode is whether the slightly larger sensor and f/1.8 lens deliver enough to make it preferable to cheaper HX or WX models, whose video is already pretty good. It would also be nice if the controls and AF were more fluid and responsive than the other models, which tend to respond very slowly. If the audio capture is just as tinny, or prone to wind noise, that's another reason to think twice before squandering more moolah.

As stated, the Sony and other cameras offer the option to shoot video in MP4 or MJPEG, if AVCHD is to heavy to edit or stream on-line.

AVCHD can be imported directly into the post-2007 versions of Premier, Vegas, Avid, or PowerDirector. Corel has long offered a product that allows one to edit AVCHD in slower PCs by use of proxy files.

The h.264 MOV format used by many DSLRs is slightly easier to edit than AVCHD, but I am not aware that any Canon or Nikon cameras offer a 1080 60p version. Some people crave higher bitrates (50mbps and up!), but the advantage is eaten up by the higher moiré and aliasing one sees in full-frame video, or require filters that soften the results. Stuff shot at 24mbps, 17mpbs, or even less, looks plenty fine when exported to Blu-ray. Those quality levels are well in excess of what your Uncle Herb sees on YT, especially if he opts for the 480p 4mbps default mode.

Some pre-2011 PC editing products have trouble with the 1080 60p AVCHD2, or require one to convert it to 1080 60i or 720 60p to be shareable. To stream 1080 60p video via YouTube or Vimeo is sort of an oxymoron, since the 24mbps or higher native bitrate is way higher than most people's bandwidth or the sharing sites' bitrate ceiling.
