Puzzled by Macro tubes with Pentax 100mm lens

Have been resurrecting my Pentax Takumar lenses for use on my E-pl1. Fairly happy with the 100mm F4 Macro which seems pretty sharp (if I can hold the image steady enough to get the photo). The lens seems to be a 1:2 and as far as I understand it this means less magnification than 1:1. On pentaxforums.com they recommend overcoming this with extension tubes (probably on film cameras).

So I got some M42 tubes and stuck them on my 100mm, but I can't see any difference with or without the tubes. Does this have to do with the crop factor? Am I missing something? Thanks for any help.
