Polarizer filters with digital SLRs

I have been around plenty of outdoor photographers and have noticed that some are believers and some are opposed. There are plenty of people who take good pictures and do not use polarizing filters. I have found that polarizing filters can exaggerate vignetting. A slim polarizing filter reduces this effect, but then the lens cap does not work.
