If you don't edit shots shoot jpeg. If you do shoot raw. Raw files aren't very big coming from the D700 so that's nice. You can edit jpegs too, but if you're going to edit in something like LR you might as well edit the raw files.

Also remember you can increase saturation, sharpness, etc right on the camera. I thought my D700 jpegs were a little soft, so I increased the sharpness a little bit
