Thank you all for your feedback! This has been really helpful! I was thinking the 85mm, but was not sure if that was the best option. I photographed some of the artifacts last summer and had plenty of light and used the tripod with a remote, but I just could not get close enough with my old lens to get the detail of the smaller objects. It sounds like this should solve the problem!

This project should last me another year or two, but I will probably be shooting artifacts for the rest of my career. Once I have a real job I can perhaps invest in something a bit better.
