Does my new jackdaw have backfocus?

Ha, ha. I don't think there is anything wrong with your jackdaw. It would probably be much frowned on now but, when I was a child we used to visit the jackdaw nests and take one of the young ones and keep it as a pet. It always flew away after about a year anyway when it came to breeding season. They were very friendly and great fun. Used to pull all the clothes pegs off my grannies washing. I remember getting into trouble from the headmaster and my local primary school because it kept following me to school.
