Good places and events to shoot in Los Angeles?

I shoot commercial and weddings for a living but still have lots of love for shooting documentary style (street and events) since my background comes from being a former metro newspaper and editorial photographer.

I know a few good places to do that around LA like Downtown and Venice Beach. Any other places that would be good to check out?

Also is there an event calendar that would be good from a photographers point of view. Most calendars are basically for concerts and food events.
