A question concerning 5D3 AF point selection

The user manual of 5D3 says it is necessary to press the AF point selection button prior to AF point selection via multi-controller. Is that right? It seems there is one step (pressing the AF point selection button) redundant, resulting to slowing down the operation of AF point selection. The older Canon cameras omitted this step.
