It's definitely not a bad choice for some hobbyist birding. Obviously, if you're in it for serious business, you'll probably need more/faster glass, as other commenters have pointed out. But for my purposes, I've been extremely pleased with the 100-300mm; its only major weak point is a fair bit of CA.
