I just got my first macro lens last week, a Sigma 150 2.8, and it is for sure a different animal shooting macro. I got the 150 used for just over $400. A real bargain in my eyes. One thing the original poster needs to know, is that with macro your depth of field is extremely small. To get enough of your subject in focus, you'll have to shoot at F/8-F16. Because of this having an alternate source of light (flash) is important.

Also, if you're shooting from directly over the subject, your close focusing distance will cause the camera to block out a lot of light. It's been rainy and windy here the last week, but I did go out and snap a couple shots. The flowers were about the size of a dime. I've got a lot to learn, but macro opens up a whole new world.
