That is why you have the option of buying body only and then buy the lens you prefer. I prefered the wider and longer 16-85 to the kit lens bundled with the D3100 and although it still does not offer the long range of my wife's SX40 (35x zoom) it is all other respects vastly superior - which makes it a good reason to upgrade from P+S.

The lens is actually more pricey than the body, I got what I paid for and do not regret it for a moment.

I am sure that the better low-light performance, the fast focussing and response as well as the OVF is reason enough to give up a P+S (other than for a 2nd camera).
