Yeah, this is exactly what happened to me when I was a kid - nothing anecdotal about it! Whilst using my 4.5" Newtonian - not knowing any better - I used the supplied eyepiece 'Sun' filter to observe the Sun on a 30C degree day. After about 10 minutes, it cracked and left me mostly blind in the right eye ... for about an hour. I think it may have caused my first cataract at the age of 49.

No, not highly recommended!
