It is not possible to change the dynamic range the sensor is capable of capturing by changing the tone curve. By changing the curve (e.g. by underexposing one stop and pulling shadows and mid-tones to compensate for the underexposure), you gain DR at the one end (in the example: one stop in the highlights) and lose it at the other end (one stops in the shadows due to more noise). Using a better noise reduction algorithm can give the impression of more overall DR, though.
