NatGeo thinks fish eye lenses are gimmicky?

Did you read this message already?

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/your-shot/manipulation

Quotation:

"FISH-EYE LENSES: OK, but enter at your own risk - editors tend to dislike such optical gimmicks."

I was eagerly nodding my head when reading these guidelines until he/she referred fisheye lenses as "optical gimmicks".

Huh?

I beg to differ. Even if they are cheap these days and one gets to see a lot of boring and samey FE pics in Flicr and the like this hardly renders the lenses gimmicky. These lenses have been around for a while and have been used for some extremely strong photography.

What is the frame of reference here? Are ultra wide rectilinear lenses not "gimmicky"? What about powerful telephoto lenses? They too render "reality" in a way that is unnatural to human eyesight.
