Why, oh why...

...would you compare a specialist prime like the 17mm TS-E to an ultra-wide zoom? I might as well compare Nikon's AF-S 24/1.4 to Canon's 16-35/2.8L II. Granted, Nikon has no 17mm PC-E for direct comparison, but there are other prime options in the ultra-wide range. The 18/3.5 ZF comes to mind.

Anyway, doesn't seem like a fair fight.

I agree a fair bit. The D800e isn't just a minor step up. We're talking nearly 30% more rez and nearly 2 stops extra DR.

Did you perform a side by side test with the 14-24 on the D800E vs the 5D II or III with the TS-E 17?

The difference is huge in the corners for the Canon system - it is very disappointing for the Nikon system

I am not talking about the theoretical performance.

many in the forums read paper values and do their own assumptions (which I did too when I was a child)

Now I simply get the things in my hands (as a potential customer you can always lend things) and try them out in real world situations.

The 14-24 at the end of the frame shows a very bad performance compare to the 5D II plus the TS-E 17 - printed the results 1 m wide (some 32 inches). In the center the D800E is hardly any better - in the corners the Canon System is dramatically better (shifted and stitched to suit the FOV of 14 mm)

Very special workflow but it is mine - things might be different if Nikon would have a PC-E 17 though - but they don't. The same applies to the 70-200 f/2.8 VR vs the 70-200 f/4.0 L IS USM - Nikon is far behind my expectations - in fact the 5D II wins in perceived printed quality - did a lot of prints from LightRoom with both cameras and only the 85 f/1.4 was superior to my TS-E 90 as direct counter part - but not by much - all other camera lens combinations failed my test at Nikon.

I am brand agnostic - just wanted to see which system perfomes better.

The DR is nice to have but nothing to really mention - as soon as you have harsh contrasts even the 13 or 14 steps DR are not sufficient and I normally do always exposure bracketing if I do an important image - I am no street photographer so I couldn't care less for AF and DR - I always have time for my images and I care for perceivable printed quality - no theoretical possibilities.

This is the link to the virtual print of the 14-24 vs Canon 5D II with TS-E 17

SYSTEM performance not the same lens on every camera but the best of each system in wide angle lenses - did the same for zooms and primes - only the 85 f/1.4 could convince me
