The Oly 12-50 is a kit zoom; also think of the Panny 14-42 X...

…which offers outstanding compactness PLUS an 11-84 range (22-168 equiv) while retaining maximum aperture, with two small, compact, accessory lenses. (Oly was already offering the 11 bottom end with an accessory lens on the 14-42 standard kit zoom, but no accessory telephoto to stretch the long end.)

And bear in mind that they both offer desired video capabilities (desired by many P&S upgraders, that is) and in the case of the Oly 12-50, weather proofing.

Those are some pretty useful features, I reckon.

It should also be born in mind that the upgraders are upgrading for other reasons; one being that they are moving into interchangeable lens cameras to give them zoom range with e.g. larger sensors. In most cases, they would be aware of zoom range limitations in bigger cameras and would understand that they aren’t going to get a big range without a very big lens.

Cheers, geoff
