This is a 2.5ft-tall great egret, at around 20 feet away, no cropping.

Guy ollie-ing on a skateboard, at around 25-30 feet away, 5% cropped out.

A 210mm telephoto is not a long telephoto. It's really for bringing you into the subject, like this:

This a large seagull, at around 4-5 feet away.

Also, it needs to be noted that $350 is chump change in the world of tele-lenses. The ones you see on the sidelines of NFL games cost upwards of $10K, as are some you might see out in the wilderness scenic areas where people might be photographing wildlife.

Your perspective on camera gear changes greatly once you really get into it and begin to recognize what people are actually using. Just this weekend shooting fireworks at the Golden Gate Bridge 75th anniversary, I noted that every other camera/lens/tripod combination around were in the ballpark of $10K.
