I'm getting a feeling the D lens may be fine on a D7000 that can use almost any Nikon lens. Where it makes a difference is on the D5100 & other entry level cameras. The AF may be enough to get you close but fine tune by moving the camera in/out or adjusting the lens.

For flowers & other non moving subjects it should be fine if you can provide plenty of light without getting in the way. You may also try the macro ring flash setup since the on camera flash also acts as a commander. For insects & other stuff you would need something bigger like the Nikon 105.
