The main Nikon System 1 cameras advantage over all other mirrorless cameras is the ability to focus quickly on moving objects using phase detection auto focus. No other mirrorless camera can track focus on a moving object, because they use the much slower contrast detection auto focus that can not track a moving subject.

OTOH, the Sony has the advantage of a larger sensor and better image quality, especially at high ISOs. Keep in mind though, that the larger Sony sensor requires larger lenses. Also the advantage of a large sensor is only fully realized if the lenses are of high optical quality. Unlike the Nikon lenses, the Sony NEX lenses are not of high optical quality, unfortunately.

This comparison of the Nikon J1 and Sony C3 might help you make a comparison between the two cameras you are considering a little easier.
