A Weekend at South St. Seaport (D800 + 50mm F/1.4D)
May 30, 2012

As a photographer I switched to digital back in 2003 and since then I've used a LOT of cameras. Some, because I was intrigued and others because I'm mostly also a technology geek

Over this span of almost a decade there are very few cameras that have made my list of "forever" cameras, they are:

1. Olympus E-1
2. Nikon D700
3. Fujifilm X10

and now joining the ranks,
4. Nikon D800

I rented this camera for 4 days and was really looking forward to putting it through the ropes; I don't believe I was able to do complete justice to it over this short period of time, but being a D700 user definitely allowed me to get comfortable with the camera very easily.

Let me quickly list some pros & cons and then get to the interesting part, the pictures!

Pros:

  • Slightly, but noticeably lighter

  • Deeper hand grip makes it more comfortable on the fingers

  • Excellent OVF, 100% view is just what I needed

  • Nicer mirror sound, less "clack" and feedback compared to D700

  • Astounding resolution, dynamic range and overall image quality, this is unparalleled and something I've never seen before!

Cons:

  • Green cast on the LCD, I believe this is a combination of the monitor gamut and the warmer WB used as default on the D800.

  • Extremely high resolution also encourages nitpicking with images and definitely exposes even minor flaws in AF and vibration.

  • Lenses when used wide open don't look nearly as good as they did on the D700

Having said that, this camera is stellar, I had no usability issues and the IQ seriously just blows you away. Below are some pictures from the weekend, all C&C is welcome, please enjoy.
