The D7000 is more like your D50 than the D5100 is as far as controls. The D5100 is smaller and lighter than the D50 or D7000. I recommend handling both and seeing which one you like better for ergonomics. Image quality is very similar for the 5100 and 7000, so that shouldn't be a factor in your decision. The D7000 is definitely the more feature-rich product, so if you want to grow in your photo skills it has more to offer than the D5100.
