The t3 kit with the 18-55 and 55-250 is $650 through amazon. You could jump up to the t2i which is a better body, and get the same kit for $800. Then don't forget the nifty fifty at around $110.

I can't speak for nikon since I've never used it but they have bodies at similar price points that should give you very similar results.

The Nikon is very much the same. The d5100 is a great camera and has the sensor from a much more expensive camera. Image is said to be better than the d3100. Kit lens are fine and you would pay a lot of money to better them. In this area of the market it would be hard to go wrong.
