Remember that the metering patterns/algorhithms are separate for ambient and for flash! The former are set from the cam's top-plate, the latter are set from within the cam's CFns. (CFn no 14 page 155, for the 5D) I believe the 5D original uses ETTL II.

Chuck Westfall said that 'Evaluative for Flash' is at its best outside with bright ambient conditions -

whereas, 'Average for Flash' is at its best the rest of the time, typically, indoors etc.
