Many thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

In the end, I think Simon's analysis and experiences exactly fit what I am having. After trying all the suggestions that the group offered and a few others I concluded that this printer is not recoverable without a trip back to Epson.

Sorry my analysis (the most expensive one!) turned out to be accurate.

The good news is that I actually have an identical machine just at a different location which is being under utilized. So, I have swapped them out.

By chance, again I was in the same position, with a spare! In my case the spare was an old one with heavily clogged heads.

If you do decide to get a new one, see if Epson locally will do what they did for me: give a heavily discounted exchange price. I sent back the one with clogged heads, and kept the banded one for prints that don't need the full width of paper - at least until I run out of R1800 ink.
