Up close vs far away

I have the 600 VR and use it on my D700 with the new 2x TC.

I am finding that the 2x TC is more sensitive to technique, to loss of contrast due to contra light (veiling flare), etc. So that I have to be more aware of those things than normal to get good shots. Stopping down to f/9, f/10 etc. helps a tiny bit, but not a lot - probably because at that point diffraction is starting to take a bite out of my IQ as well.

I am also finding that the 2x TC does much, much better up close than far away. I don't know at what distances you are testing, but you might try testing the combination at closer distances (or longer) to see if there is any change.

My copy of of the 1.4 TC paired with my 600 VR ii is fantastic, with barely any IQ degredation. At f/7.1, I do see a bit more feather detail though.

Sorrry that I do not have a D800 to test this with, but after purchasing the 600 VR, I will be staying with the D700 for another year or two at least.
