EPL-2 Infra Red conversion questions
May 28, 2012

I have recently been dabbling with IR photography using a borrowed Nikon D40 and some cheap IR filters.

I have an Olympus EPL-2 that I am considering having converted for IR so that I can obtain IR images with handheld shutter speeds. I may use this company here to do the conversion as I live in the UK;

http://www.advancedcameraservices.co.uk/Specialist_UV_IR_cameras/IR.htm

However I have some questions in my mind that maybe someone with experience of this will be able to help with.

I’m a bit confused about the full spectrum conversion option. If I go for full spectrum, I understand that I still need to use filters when I want to work at a specific wavelength say 720nm.

But doesn’t that mean that using filters is going slow down shutter speeds again and therefore losing the advantage of the conversion? Or does that fact that the hot mirror has been removed mean this isn’t a problem anymore?

Would I be better considering a specific wavelength conversion rather than full spectrum? What are the advantages / disadvantages of both options?

I currently have the kit 14-42mm lens but may add the 9-18mm lens in the future. Will the camera need to be recalibrated to autofocus at the IR wavelengths and will the recalibration be okay for all lenses I wish to use?
