canon 17-40 help!

The zoom ring on my 17-40L lens just stopped working. It just "freewheels" and doesn't change the focal length. Any ideas on how to fiddle with it to get it to work. Or. I've never sent in a lens to Canon would you think it would cost above $500 to get it fixed.
