summary from my experiences
In reply to SeeRoy, May 28, 2012

The DSTE batteries

1. work fine in the OM-D

2. charge in the DSTE charger to ~8.4 volts (light changing from red to yellow/green)
3. will not charge in the OME charger
4. last a reasonable time used with all camera functions

5. communicate properly with the camera's battery-status display going through all 3 stages
6. have distribution circuitry that allows equal charging of both cells

7. appear to have a capacity of just over 1000 mAh, despite their higher stipulated ratings

The OME batteries

1. work fine in the OM-D
2. will charge in both OME and DSTE chargers
3. charge to ~8.7 volts in OME charger (light changing from red to off)
4. charge to ~8.4 volts in DSTE charger (light changing from red to off)

5. seem to last a bit longer (not twice) than DSTE used with all camera functions
6. communicate properly with the camera's battery-status display
7. have distribution circuitry that allows equal charging of both cells
8. are likely to have a capacity akin to their 1220 mAh rating.

The OME batteries appear to have a different chemistry from the DSTE, thus allowing charging (in the OME charger) to a higher voltage, and thus causing the OME charger from being compatible with batteries of standard chemistry.

For those so inclined, the excessively long cord on the OME charger can be cut down and spliced, say to 5 inches, to make a charger much more suitable for travelling.

The car charger cord available for use with the DSTE charger at $1.49 (including postage) is much less expensive than the components would cost at Radio Shack.

The DSTE batteries, when drained, require about as long to charge as the OME batteries, but they seem to be shipped with a good charge and, so, top up initially very quickly.
