Is it possible to keep exposure locked as long as I want in D40?

I consider it a bit of a failing in the otherwise superior Nikon exposure design that AE Lock times out with the meter. It really should just stay locked. I'd even like to see it stay locked when the camera is powered down to change a lens, for example.

You need to change Custom Setting "15:Auto off Timers". See page 78 of the D40 manual. Select "Custom" and set the auto meter-off delay to 30 minutes. This will let you keep your AE Lock for 30 minutes if you don't touch the camera. Touching just about any button restarts the countdown, so you could keep the same lock all day if you want. This does kill the battery a little sooner, but my D90 will run 8-10 hrs with the meter continuously on, so it's not like you're going to kill the battery in a few minutes.
